South West Cornwall Group
Riding for Disabled
Welcome to SWCG–RDA
The South West Cornwall Group is a proud member group of the Riding for Disabled Association (RDA) — one of the largest and most respected equine therapy charities in the United Kingdom.
Since 1976, we have been providing therapeutic riding and equine-assisted activities to children and adults with disabilities and health challenges across West Cornwall. Our sessions take place at our indoor and outdoor arenas at Old Mill Stables, Lelant Downs, Cornwall.
We are entirely run by dedicated volunteers — from session leaders and side walkers to fundraisers and trustees — all giving their time freely because they believe in the extraordinary power of horses to change lives.

See CompetitionsOur Horses
Calm, patient, and wonderful — our horses are the heart of everything we do
All of our horses and ponies are carefully selected and trained for RDA work. They are chosen for their gentle temperament, patience, and adaptability — qualities that make them perfect partners for riders who may have additional needs or be nervous around horses.
Our herd includes a wonderful variety — from sturdy cobs to nimbler ponies — each matched to our riders' needs. They are used to side walkers and lead rein work, and are entirely comfortable with wheelchairs, mobility aids, and the busyness of a session day.
The welfare of our horses is paramount. We work closely with our host yard at Lelant Downs to ensure the animals are well cared for, properly fed, regularly shod and vetted, and given appropriate rest days.
Our arena dressage letters — featuring fun animal pictures to help our riders remember each marker — are just one example of the thoughtful adaptations we make to support every rider's learning journey.
Help Support Our Horses
The cost of keeping horses is significant. Your donations help us continue to provide horses for our sessions. Thank you so much for your support.

Our Riders
Every rider's journey is unique — and every achievement is celebrated
We welcome riders of all ages and abilities. Our sessions are open to children and adults with a wide range of physical, cognitive, and emotional disabilities — including cerebral palsy, autism, learning difficulties, visual impairment, acquired brain injury, and many more.
Horse riding offers exceptional therapeutic benefits: it improves balance, posture, coordination and core strength, while also building confidence, communication, focus and emotional regulation. Many of our riders report that their sessions are the highlight of their week.
Each rider is individually assessed to ensure we provide the right horse, the right support, and the right session format for their needs. Our sessions are led by qualified coaches and supported by trained volunteers.
Raffie's Story
"I wasn't always disabled but became disabled in childhood. You begin to understand the world is full of things you can't do. One of the many things I couldn't do was go horse riding. It was something I enjoyed up until I couldn't do it any more.
At some point a friend asked why I wasn't riding with the RDA. I had never heard of Riding for the Disabled Association. Probably five days and one form later I was speaking to a member of my local RDA at Old Mill Stables. I was soon mounting the horse I was to relearn to ride on — Jake. Another round barrel boy who liked a treat. But with him I learned what I could do, having never thought I'd ride again.
I was moved onto Max. A willful lad who mostly does whatever he likes. He's clever though and after a battle of wills we've been together for six of the nearly nine years I've been with Southwest RDA. Riding has helped my mobility and makes me feel strong and capable. Max is not my horse but he is a grounding and consistency. I have just turned 40 and while I can't continue my education, have steady employment or drive a car — I have Max and the RDA made that possible."
— Raffie, SWCG–RDA Rider
How to Become a Rider
If you or someone you care for might benefit from therapeutic riding, we'd love to hear from you. Please get in touch using the contact form below, or download our participant application form to get started.
Our Volunteers
We couldn't do any of this without our amazing team of volunteers
Volunteering with SWCG–RDA is one of the most rewarding things you can do. Our volunteers are the lifeblood of the group — without them, we simply couldn't run our sessions.
There are many ways to get involved:
- Side Walkers — walking alongside riders to provide physical support and encouragement
- Leaders — leading horses around the arena during sessions
- Horse Helpers — assisting with grooming, tacking up and stable duties
- Session Helpers — general assistance during sessions
- Fundraising Volunteers — helping at events and fundraising activities
- Administrative Support — office and behind-the-scenes help
No previous experience with horses is necessary — we provide full training. All volunteers must complete a DBS check, and we offer RDA training sessions to help you gain the skills and confidence you need.
If you're interested in volunteering — whether you can give a few hours a week or just one day a month — we'd love to welcome you to our team.
Tea with a Pony
You don't have to ride to enjoy the magic of horses
'Tea with a Pony' is one of our most beloved events — and one that has brought enormous joy to participants who may not be able to ride.
Whether through age, health, or disability, many people cannot take part in riding sessions — but they can still experience the warmth and wonder of being close to a horse. Our ponies are brought into the arena, and guests enjoy:
Tea & Cakes
Homemade cakes, biscuits and a warm cup of tea — shared in the company of horses
Meet the Ponies
Gentle interaction — stroking, hand-feeding, and simply being near our calm, friendly horses
Fully Accessible
Our indoor arena is accessible for wheelchair users and those with mobility challenges
These sessions are particularly popular with residents from care homes, day centres, and hospice groups — as well as family members who come to watch our riders. The joy on people's faces when a horse comes close is simply indescribable.
If you would like to arrange a Tea with a Pony visit for your group, care home, or day centre, please do get in touch — we'd love to welcome you.

Competitions
Celebrating every rider's progress and achievement
Competition is a wonderful part of the RDA journey for many of our riders. It provides goals to work towards, an opportunity to showcase the incredible progress that has been made, and a chance to meet other RDA riders from across the region.
The RDA runs competitions at local, regional, and national levels — covering disciplines including dressage, show jumping, vaulting, and more. All competitions are adapted to make them accessible to riders with a wide range of disabilities.
Watching a rider — perhaps someone who has never been on a horse before — performing a dressage test with poise and confidence is one of the most moving experiences you can have. Our riders and volunteers are justifiably proud of everything they achieve together.
We also hold our own in-house competitions and shows throughout the year, which are open to all our riders and make for wonderful community days for families and supporters.
Fundraising
As a charity, fundraising is an essential and joyful part of what we do
South West Cornwall RDA is a charity in its own right, and like all charities, fundraising is an important part of what we do. The costs of running a group — horses, equipment, insurance, training, and facilities — are significant, and we rely on the generosity of our supporters to keep going.
Over the years, we have held an enormous variety of fundraising events:
Summer Fetes
Annual summer fetes with stalls, activities and horse demonstrations
Dog Shows
Family-friendly dog shows — everyone (and their dogs!) welcome
Race Nights
Fun race nights and quiz evenings for supporters and friends
Meals & Events
Numerous meals out and social events throughout the year
Cream Teas & Coffee Mornings
Relaxed and friendly coffee mornings and cream teas — everyone welcome
200 Club
Join our 200 Club monthly lottery — anyone can join and you could win a prize!
All funds raised go directly towards buying and caring for our horses, purchasing specialist equipment, and making our sessions as enjoyable and effective as possible for our riders.
If you would like to help with fundraising, or have an idea for an event, we'd love to hear from you!

Watching our riders grow in confidence, strength, and joy — session by session — reminds us every week why we do this. Horses have a unique gift: they reach people in ways that nothing else can. The South West Cornwall Group has been changing lives since 1976, and with your help, we will keep doing so for many years to come.
